Dwarka – The Eternal City of Lord Krishna

Situated on the western tip of the Saurashtra Peninsula in Gujarat, Dwarka is one of India’s most sacred and ancient cities, revered as the legendary kingdom of Lord Krishna. Often referred to as the “Gateway to Heaven” or the “City of Gold,” Dwarka holds immense spiritual, historical, and archaeological significance, drawing lakhs of devotees and tourists from around the world every year.

Dwarka’s roots are deeply intertwined with the epic Mahabharata. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna established Dwarka as his capital after leaving Mathura to avoid constant wars with Jarasandha. The scriptures describe Dwarka as a magnificent, well-planned city built by the divine architect Vishwakarma, adorned with golden palaces and grand courtyards. However, legend says that the city eventually submerged into the sea after Krishna’s departure from the mortal world — a mystery that continues to fascinate historians and archaeologists even today.

Modern Dwarka, located on the banks of the Gomti River and overlooking the Arabian Sea, is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, alongside Badrinath, Puri, and Rameswaram. It is also one of the Sapta Puris — the seven most ancient and holy cities of India. The city’s spiritual heartbeat is the Dwarkadhish Temple, also known as the Jagat Mandir, dedicated to Lord Krishna. This stunning five-storied temple, rising about 78 meters high, is supported by 72 pillars and is said to be over 2,500 years old, though the current structure dates to the 15th–16th century. The temple’s exquisite carvings, towering shikhara (spire), and the fluttering flag changed five times a day symbolize the eternal presence of Lord Krishna.

Another major attraction is the Rukmini Devi Temple, located 2 km from the main city, dedicated to Krishna’s consort, Devi Rukmini. The Gomti Ghat, where the sacred Gomti River meets the sea, is another holy spot where devotees perform rituals and take a dip to purify themselves. The city also has several smaller shrines dedicated to Vasudeva, Balrama, and Subhadra, adding to its spiritual charm.

Apart from its religious importance, Dwarka also holds archaeological intrigue. Marine excavations off the coast of Dwarka have revealed submerged structures, ancient artifacts, and stone anchors — leading scholars to believe that remnants of the fabled ancient Dwarka might indeed lie beneath the waves of the Arabian Sea. These discoveries have added a fascinating historical dimension to the city’s mythological legacy.

For visitors, Dwarka offers a serene blend of devotion, history, and coastal beauty. The scenic Dwarka Beach, the peaceful Sunset Point, and the nearby Beyt Dwarka Island — believed to be Lord Krishna’s residence — add to the charm of this timeless destination. The island is accessible by ferry and houses the ancient temple of Dwarkadhish as well.

Today, Dwarka stands as a symbol of faith and divinity — a place where mythology, spirituality, and history converge beautifully. Whether one visits to seek Lord Krishna’s blessings or to witness the marvels of an ancient civilization, Dwarka continues to captivate the hearts of all who walk its sacred shores.
